Piano wire would be great but not many people has access. Cut a 1/4 wide strip off one side of a .005 feeler gauge. See if it will fit. This ring locking, not the piston surface seizure, is what actually causes your engine to quit. When the piston ring becomes locked back in it's groove, it's incapable of providing compression sealing against the cylinder wall.

Pooling oil in the cylinder and wet oily plugs are classic symptom of glazing. 1 quart in2 hours is a lot and is a sign that something is wrong, for a new engine, and unless the scoring is deep it is not likely the cause.
