Almost every year in Svalbard, polar bears are shot due to encounters with people. Over recent decades, human lives have been lost and numerous people have been injured. WebIt is obvious that human behaviours are pushing the bears toward conflict, with the potential for deadly consequences on both sides. As sea ice continues to shrink, encounters between people and polar bears on land are likely to become more frequent. The outcomes of such encounters will depend largely on the choices people make.
