SpletChunking is a technique that allows memory to remember more things. Chunking involves organizing material into meaningful groups. Chunking can greatly increase recall capacity. For example, in recalling a phone number, chunking the digits into three groups (area code, prefix, and extension). SpletMiller proposed that chunks are the correct measure for the information in the human cognitive system, and that 7 ± 2 chunks can be held in short-term memory. Chase and Simon ( 1973 ) proposed a general theory of processes underpinning chunking.
