Lieutenant Richard Henry Pratt, the school’s founder and first superintendent, persuaded the federal government that training Native children to accept the white man’s ways and values would be more efficient than fighting deadly battles. 網頁Britain’s first state public house, opened in July 1916, was the Gretna Tavern on Lowther Street (formerly the General Post Office and now a bank). Premises licensed under this scheme were also required to serve food and provide recreational facilities such as darts and dominoes. This initiative became known as ‘The Carlisle Experiment’.
